Where do you go when you are thirsty?

July 1, 2007 - Hummingbird on my porch

Where did you get your last drink when you were thirsty?

I was getting a drink of water from my refrigerator and something caught my eye. I turned and looked. There was an amazing little hummingbird hovering around my Hanging Fuchsia. So perfect, …so delicate, …on a mission. Doing that for which he was created!

I stood and watched for a long, long time.

My life flashed before me like it has many times over (the very meaningful) last year. I have finally, in this afternoon in my life, come to fully internalize the fact that we all have a void within. We search and search this world for something that will satisfy the thirst the void creates. No matter what I tried all my life*, NOTHING satisfied me. Only in the past year has the penny dropped! What a lot of time I have wasted! If we do not go to the well that was meant to satisfy the thirst, we will remain troubled… anxious… unfulfilled… and the thirst will continue to nag at us persistently. Nothing else will do!

It’s a mysterious thing. Not something that I can actually explain to you, where you will have an “Ah, ha…” moment. It’s something that grows in your understanding if you will let it. It is something that your spirit will long for, but you don’t know it.

Most of us don’t stand still long enough to feel the longing, we don’t want to bother with it because it takes too much thought. We don’t like ‘thoughts’ much in this day and age, we want everything handed to us on a platter, we want noise and activity so we don’t have to deal with those thoughts.

Just like that little hummingbird knows where to go to fulfill his thirst, we should know that a right relationship with our creator is the one and only thing that will satisfy us. This is very deep. And the thing of it is that when you think you’ve ‘got it’, the devil blinds you to the reality of your poverty. he doesn’t want you to REally ‘get it’, because he knows he will loose you.

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” – Jesus in Matthew 11:28-30 (The Message)

Where do you go when you are “thirsty”.
